About the awardsServing the communities of Helme, Wilshaw and Meltham
Meltham Town Council is the first tier of local government serving the communities of Wilshaw, Helme and Meltham.
Meltham sits within the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees, in West Yorkshire. It lies in the Holme Valley, below Wessenden Moor, four and a half miles south-west of Huddersfield on the edge of the Peak District National Park. You can find a map of the Town Council area here.
The Town Council is made up of 12 elected Councillors and usually meets on the third Monday (except August) every month. At its annual meeting in May each year it elects the Town Mayor of Meltham and appoints Councillors to serve on committees for the municipal year ahead.
The Council currently has three committees which are governed by their terms of reference and scheme of delegation with working groups formed by either the council or committee by formal resolution -:
1. Planning Environment and Amenities – oversees planning, licensing, environmental issues, amenity and highway matters and public transport. The maintenance, management, and improvement issues regarding Robert Ashton Memorial Park. Considers and comments on planning application’s within the Town Council area.
2. Properties, Administration, Finance and General Purposes – ensures sound financial management with monitoring of the financial administration of the Council. The management of all Council buildings, land, and resources. Considers the Council’s strategic and corporate development. Deals with all matters relating to the general day to day administration of the Council which do not specifically fall under the remit of another Committee.
3. Personnel and Councillor Development Committee – considers staffing issues including recruitment, staff management, development, welfare and succession planning. Ensures the Council meets its statutory obligations in relation to employment law. Considers Councillor development issues including induction of new councillors and ongoing Councillor training and development.
The Town Mayor for the 24/25 municipal year is Councillor David Haigh.

About the awardsCome and visit our lovely park with two enclosed play areas. Free parking. Take a walk around the pond and see the ducks. There is also lots of space to play and picnic.
About the parkThe Council have two allotment sites in Meltham – contact us if you are interested in a plot. A third site in Meltham is managed by the Calmlands Allotment Association.
