The Robert Ashton Memorial Park is owned and managed by Meltham Town Council. The park as it stands today once incorporated Meltham Hall and the land upon Hall Close now stands. The park was gifted to Meltham Urban District Council in 1944.
In 2020, Meltham Town Council commissioned Landscape Architects from Kirklees Council to begin developing a plan for the future management of the park; to include replacement of the play equipment and modernisation of the tennis court. These plans are now coming to fruition and work begins from 23 October, which will begin with tree pruning to enable the temporary works site to be created which will house the contractors for the duration of the works.
Town Mayor of Meltham, Cllr Richard Noon remarked “It is fantastic that we’re now at the delivery stage of this project. It is a project which has been driven by the entire Council and every single Councillor over the last couple of years. We see the park as a key strategic asset in our plans to encourage visitors to Meltham, whilst moreover providing a great recreation space for local residents. It was a pleasure to be part of the team that have that got this to this point and want to thank all those who contributed to the plan as part of the various consultation processes.”
We’ll provide updates on the refurbishment of the park on this page; the work is expected to take 6-8 weeks to complete.
