Pupils at Meltham Moor Primary School recently had a special visit from the Town Mayor, Lisa Coates, and Cllr Ann Jurczyszyn, who attended a school assembly to talk about the importance of democracy, voting and the role of the Town Council.
The visit provided an excellent opportunity for pupils to learn more about how local democracy works and how elected representatives help make decisions that benefit the community. Mayor Lisa Coates and Cllr Ann Jurczyszyn spoke about their responsibilities as councillors, the importance of representing local residents and how voting gives people a voice in shaping their community.
The assembly was particularly timely, as it coincided with the announcement of the school’s newly elected School Council. Pupils heard firsthand how democratic processes work at both school and local government level, helping them to understand the importance of participation, leadership and community involvement.
Mayor Lisa Coates said it was encouraging to see so many young people taking an interest in democracy and public service, while Cllr Ann Jurczyszyn praised the enthusiasm shown by pupils throughout the assembly.
The newly elected School Council members were congratulated on their success and encouraged to make the most of their roles, representing their fellow pupils and helping to make a positive difference within the school community.
The visit highlighted the strong links between local government and schools, inspiring pupils to think about the value of active citizenship and demonstrating that everyone, regardless of age, can play a part in helping their community thrive.
Congratulations to all of the newly elected School Council representatives, and thank you to Meltham Moor Primary School for welcoming the Mayor and councillors to what was an informative and inspiring assembly.
