The colourful flags were carefully installed in time for Yorkshire Day on 1 August. The project has brought together people of all ages and backgrounds to create a unique display that showcases Meltham’s strong community spirit and rich textile heritage.
Throughout August, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy the wonderful artworks displayed around the town before they are brought together for a special showcase at the popular Picnic in the Park event on 29 August.
The installation of the flags was led by members of Make Meltham Sparkle, including David Jurczyszyn and Councillors Russell Barrowclough, Richard Crankshaw and John Varley. They were assisted by members of the Meltham Textiles Group, including Barbara Lee, Councillor Ann Jurczyszyn, Kirklees Councillor Julia Roebuck and her daughter, together with Ruth Pickles, Liz Simmonds and Graham Simmonds.
The project has been a true community effort, with local schools, residents and community organisations contributing imaginative and colourful designs. Drawing inspiration from Meltham’s proud textile traditions as well as the town’s natural beauty and community life, the flags create an eye-catching display that brightens the town centre and celebrates local talent.
Councillors and volunteers involved in the installation praised the enthusiasm shown by everyone who took part, highlighting the way the project has brought people together while creating something that can be enjoyed by the whole community.
The organisers would like to thank everyone who contributed their time, creativity and support to the project. They hope residents will take the opportunity to explore the displays throughout August and then join the community celebration at Picnic in the Park on 29 August, where the full collection of textile flags will be showcased together.
The project is another example of how Meltham’s residents and community groups continue to work together to make the town an attractive, welcoming and vibrant place for everyone.
